Single-Sided Deafness
(NAPSA)-More than 60,000 Americans per
year become victims of Single Sided Deafness (SSD) through viral
infections, trauma or surgical intervention. Many with SSD must make
dramatic life changes and can no longer function well professionally
or socially. For a long time there was no specific treatment for SSD.
Hearing aids don't work for this type of deafness.
Fortunately, the FDA recently
cleared a solution known as the BAHA system. Placed behind the deaf
ear, the device transfers sound through bone conduction. Implanting
the device requires only a short outpatient surgical procedure under
general or local anesthesia. At least 18,000 people have been helped
by this system.
