The Prime of Life

By Colonel James Sullivan

For many years I perceived 65 years of age as being "OLD". Time has a way of drastically changing our perspective of things. The drastic change for me came on November 7th this year.

I could retire. I could draw social security. I could get a retirement check. I could get senior discounts. Maud and I took a much needed "retirement vacation" of 12 weeks. We were "tired" after 42 years of intensive service with The Salvation Army, 20 years right here in Las Vegas. After 12 weeks I had to go back to work. I'm doing Financial Development work for The Salvation Army. My job is to "raise" money to pay for all the programs I started for the Army. I'm 65 and "I'm in my Prime!"

In this column I hope to share with you readers some of the programs that I feel deserve your support. In January 2003 we officially opened the Silvercrest Senior Residence at 2801 Equador Ave. This is adjacent to The Salvation Army North Las Vegas Corps. on E. Cheyenne. It is an affordable residence for low-income seniors. Seniors who qualify pay only 30% of income for rent. There are 60 lovely 1 -bedroom units. Each unit has a refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave, and disposal. Utilities are included in the rent. This is a wonderful place to live, make new friends, and become part of a sharing community. The residence is strategically located near the Community College of Southern Nevada, medical services, shopping is nearby, and public bus transportation.

Another expanded program for seniors is our new Adult Health Day Care Center in Boulder City. The Senior Center of Boulder City has made space available for 15 seniors needing day care services. The location is at 1001 Arizona St. in Boulder City. The Salvation Army's Henderson Friendship Circle is operating this new program. They have over 15 years experience in operating the Adult Health Day Care Services in Henderson. Applications are being taken for the new program. The program offers a variety of recreational and educational activities designed to reinforce awareness and orientation and to promote social interaction. A hot lunch and an afternoon snack are provided. Licensed nursing care is provided including medical administration, clinical evaluation, bed rest and transportation to medical appointments. Activities include arts and crafts, games, and physical exercise. The Salvation Army maintains a full time highly trained competent staff that treats all the clients like VIP's. Call Mr. Bill Sampson at 565-8836 Ext. 235 for more information. Of course these programs cost money, but I don't know any organization that gives you "more bang for your buck" than The Salvation Army. Management Expert Peter Drucker calls the Army "the most effective organization in the U.S." Mail your donations to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 28369, Las Vegas, NV 89126 or call me personally at 651-9550.
